I can speak from personal experience and from having worked with many successful business people and from having frequented very successful individuals in their own rights (outside of work) that the following video by Philippe Gabilliet (professor at the prestigious ESCP Europe business school) is a fantastic summary of what differentiates successful people from those less successful.
It is generally agreed that successful people are perseverant by nature. They work hard at what they do and hard work generally gets noticed. Hard work alone, however, is not enough. The other aspect of the luck formula has to do with what Mr. Gabilliet calls, "constantly creating windows of opportunity" for luck to enter.
Lucky people have an ability to create these opportunities by (1) remaining aware of possibilities for new encounters in line with where they want to go, (2) spending their time in the right environment (events, people, geography, etc...) that is of interest to them, and (3) listening for and noticing new opportunities and having the courage to make demands or ask for help to reach a goal. This concept is one that I have followed for a very long time and it transcends any situation (personal, professional, self-discovery, etc....) and it is attached to the very important concept that luck is created. Lucky people around you are not the simple recipient of dumb luck but actually create their own environment for repeated luck to occur.
